The Wunda Chair (Pilates Equipment Part 2)
Rumour has it that Joseph Pilates invented the Chair for a client who lived in a tiny apartment and wanted to continue their Pilates exercises at home.
Joe Pilates developed three (!) different styles of the Chair. At Joyful Fitness Pilates Studio, I have the Wunda Chair. The other two chairs are called the Small Arm Chair and the Electric Chair (click the links to see pictures). The Wunda Chair will make you feel WUNDA-ful!
Depending on the brand, the Wunda Chair can have 2-4 springs; the traditional Wunda Chair has 2 heavy springs.
The Wunda Chair has a seat (no back or arms) and springs attached from a cactus at the back to a pedal at the front (in the picture above you can see my Wunda Chair has a split pedal - even more fun!). Because the Wunda Chair doesn’t have any other supports and it is higher from the floor than The Reformer, it offers some quite challenging exercises and variations.
Additionally, the pedal and the springs are at different angles which create novel work in the body. In my classes, I like using the Wunda Chair for standing leg work and balance practice.
Move with joy!
